The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
